I spent several days this past week in Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, if you are not familiar with that I recommend a trip. It truly is a great place, to get out and explore. When I arrived home, put away all of the camping gear, downloaded all of the photos and had a chance to just kick back. I found myself with some free time and decided to replicate a photo I saw. I know its not a portrait in the traditional sense but hey its a portrait of a different kind.
This was actually pretty easily done, I went to Lowe's and picked up some black bathroom tiles, only because they didn't have big tiles I had to get several small ones. I also grabbed a lightbulb there. I wanted to have an Edison style bulb that gave off that antique yellow when it was lit. And then I bought some sparklers. The most expensive and the most difficult thing to come by oddly enough was the sparklers. In the state of Oklahoma you can only buy fireworks during the weeks leading up to the 4th of July; who knew.
The other challenge I had was that I could not buy a box of sparklers, I had buy a package of six boxes for $10. I told the guy at the counter that I only needed one box, he laughed at me and I ended up buying the six boxes, oh and because I was one of the first to buy they were buy one get one. So now I have 120 sparklers, if you need some please don't hesitate to ask.
The set up was pretty easy, I took some putty I got from Hobby Lobby, stuck it to the bulb and then cut the sparkler to size to fit behind the bulb and used putty on that. I then played with the F-stop and shutter speed until I got the look I wanted. I ended up using 8 sparklers until I got the look I wanted.
